I got an idea. One. Last year. A little self-created photography art project to photograph Salmon Poetry Bookshop & Literary Centre in Ennistymon. I have always loved books, ever since I could read and before that when my father would read before bedtime. When I came to Ireland and discovered Salmon Poetry, it was such a treat to walk into the bookshop and being surrounded by books and poetry, the smell of books and the odd calm books exudes. I would be wonderful to see if I could capture the feeling of the place and the books through my lens.
Salmon Poetry, taking its name from the Salmon of Knowledge in Celtic Mythology, was established in 1981 as an alternative voice in Irish listerature. The Salmon, a journal of poetry and prose was a flagship for writers in the West of Ireland. By specialising in the promotion of new poets, particularly women poets, Salmon has enriched Irish literary publishing.
Little did I know, when I contacted Jessie Lendennie at Salmon Poetry that my idea would become a little historic memory, since they had to vacate the building that same year, 2023. Through GoFundMe they raised what was needed to buy an old pub on the Main Street, in Ennistymon for the Salmon Poetry Bookshop to move to. It was phenomenal. Such is the community in Co. Clare and far beyond. Treasuring books, independent bookshops and the arts. When people come together to help each other, anything is possible.
The photographs can now be found on print exclusively in The Salmon Poetry bookshop. Size A5, printed with eco-inks on 350 gms 100% recycled paper.
They will be available to order as an archival print on 100% cotton Hahnemühle photography paper in due time too size A4 – A2. Any inquiries are welcome.
